Ingrown toenails

An ingrown toenail is a nail that has pierced or is pressing against the adjacent skin of the toe causing pain and inflammation. Sometimes it can lead to infection.

Sometimes the affected toenail can be treated by your podiatrist by removing the offending portion of nail providing instant relief. In some cases, however, the ingrown toenail can become repeatedly infected or be continually infected, inhibiting work, sport and the ability to wear shoes. In these situations a more permanent solution is required.

Nail surgery (PNA) is commonly performed by our podiatrists enabling a permanent solution to problematic ingrown toenails. It can be undertaken in a day and the patient is able to walk away immediately.

Upon completion of the procedure, several review consultations are required for redressing. In the initial days after the procedure the use of open toe shoes and activity modification may be necessary. Interference with day to day activities is minimal.
