Ingrown toenail surgery/PNA

Nail surgery is a common procedure performed by the podiatrist to effectively treat an ingrown nail.

A ‘Partial Nail Avulsion’ (PNA) is performed under local anaesthetic to the toe to numb the area.

Features of a PNA

The offending portion of nail is trimmed away.

No cutting of the toe or stitching is required.

A chemical may also be applied to prevent the re-growth of the nail providing a permanent solution to the problem.

Upon completion of the procedure, the patient is able to walk away immediately.

After the surgery several review consultations are required over the following week for redressing. In the initial days after the procedure the use of open toe shoes and activity modification may be necessary.

Interference with day to day activities is minimal.
